Connected Waterways

Kalamazoo Lake is a wide, shallow basin of the Kalamazoo River between Saugatuck and Douglas. The Kalamazoo River enters from the southeast after flowing 130 miles across southern Michigan, and exits northwest through a dredged channel to Lake Michigan. This makes Kalamazoo Lake a direct gateway to the Great Lakes — boats can run the channel to open Lake Michigan in minutes.

Winter & Ice Safety

Kalamazoo Lake is shallow and can freeze in hard winters, but the river current and Lake Michigan influence make ice conditions unreliable. This is not an ice fishing destination — the draw here is open-water salmon and trout fishing from the channel and Lake Michigan.

Frequently Asked Questions
How big is Kalamazoo Lake?
Kalamazoo Lake covers about 240 acres with a maximum depth around 20 feet. It's essentially a wide basin of the Kalamazoo River between the towns of Saugatuck and Douglas. The lake connects directly to Lake Michigan via a dredged channel.
Can you get to Lake Michigan from Kalamazoo Lake?
Yes — the Kalamazoo River channel runs from the northwest end of Kalamazoo Lake directly to Lake Michigan. It's about a 5-minute boat ride through the channel to open water. This makes Kalamazoo Lake a major staging area for Lake Michigan fishing and cruising.
What fish are in Kalamazoo Lake?
The lake itself holds bass, catfish, carp, and panfish. But the real fishing is through the channel — Lake Michigan access means King Salmon, Coho Salmon, Steelhead, Lake Trout, and Brown Trout are all targeted from Saugatuck charter boats. Note the PCB advisory on the Kalamazoo River — check Eat Safe Fish guidelines before keeping anything from the river system.
Are there marinas on Kalamazoo Lake?
Several. Tower Marine on the south shore (Douglas) is the largest with 400+ slips, fuel, repairs, a pool, and the Red Dock Café. Saugatuck Harbor Marina, Wicks Park Marina, and Saugatuck Landings are all on the Saugatuck side. Transient slips are available at most during summer.
Where is the public boat launch?
Schultz Park in Douglas has a hard-surface boat launch with updated docks, cement ramps, bathrooms, and ample parking. It's the primary public launch for accessing Kalamazoo Lake, the Kalamazoo River, and Lake Michigan.
Where should I stay in Saugatuck?
Saugatuck and Douglas have hundreds of vacation rentals ranging from $300/night downtown condos to $2,000+/night lakefront estates. Downtown riverfront properties put you walking distance from restaurants and shops. For boaters, look for properties with dock access on the Kalamazoo River or Lake Michigan beachfront homes south of town on Lakeshore Drive.
What is there to do in Saugatuck?
Saugatuck is Michigan's Art Coast — over 30 galleries, the Saugatuck Center for the Arts, and the famous Ox-Bow art school. Oval Beach is consistently rated one of the best in the country. The Chain Ferry crosses the river to Mt. Baldhead. Boat cruises on the Star of Saugatuck, kayak rentals, Saugatuck Dunes State Park hiking, and a vibrant restaurant and brewery scene round it out.
Can you swim in Kalamazoo Lake?
Most people swim at Oval Beach on Lake Michigan or Douglas Beach Park rather than in Kalamazoo Lake itself. The lake is shallow and has boat traffic from the marinas. Oval Beach is a short drive or ferry ride from downtown and is the primary swimming destination.
Is there a fishing charter in Saugatuck?
Yes — Saugatuck is a major charter fishing port. Best Chance Charters has won more Lake Michigan salmon tournaments than any other boat. Multiple other charter operations run out of the harbor targeting King Salmon, Coho, Steelhead, and Lake Trout from spring through fall.
How far is Saugatuck from Grand Rapids?
About 45 miles — roughly a 50-minute drive via US-131 and Blue Star Highway. Holland is 20 minutes north, South Haven is 30 minutes south. Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids is the closest major airport.
Scout's Notes
Lake Vibe & Fishing Intel

Kalamazoo Lake is the harbor lake shared by Saugatuck and Douglas — a roughly 240-acre shallow basin where the Kalamazoo River widens before exiting through a dredged channel to Lake Michigan. At around 20 feet deep with visibility of 1–6 feet depending on season, it's not a destination lake for fishing in itself. What makes it special is location: this is the heart of Michigan's Art Coast, and the lake is the front yard of two of the most charming small towns in the Midwest. Tower Marine on the south shore has 400+ slips, and a dozen marinas and docking spots line both banks.

For boaters, Kalamazoo Lake is a staging area. Run the channel northwest and you're on Lake Michigan in five minutes — world-class salmon and trout fishing, plus access to the entire lakeshore from South Haven to Holland. The Schultz Park launch in Douglas has updated docks and cement ramps for trailered boats. If you've heard concerns about PCBs from the Kalamazoo River Superfund designation: a comprehensive 2019 sediment study by Michigan Tech found no PCBs in surface sediments above regulatory limits, and no PCBs have been detected in harbor surface water since 2014. The water is safe to recreate in.
