Lake Manatee is the Manatee River impounded behind Lake Manatee Dam; the river enters from the east and continues west toward Tampa Bay below the dam. There is no lock or boat passage at the dam — this is a closed water, and every trip in or out is a tow. The dam is also why there are no manatees in the lake: it blocks their access from the river.
This reservoir is operated, and the band is wide: full pool is 39.1 feet (NAVD 88) and the minimum usable elevation about 14 feet lower — an intake sill, not a lake bottom, so do not read the gap as depth. Manatee County moves the pool ahead of storms; before Hurricane Debby in August 2024 it drew the lake down to 36 feet, then released about 18 billion gallons through the dam. Algae is the other calendar: per the county's utility, blooms run two to three times a year for two to four weeks each, most often late spring and early summer — anglers in May and June fish through the same bloom that changes Bradenton's tap water. No public stage feed exists for the reservoir; the upstream USGS gauge at SR 64 measures inflow above the lake, not lake level.

Lake Manatee is the Manatee River backed up behind an earth dam east of Bradenton, and it is the drinking-water supply for Manatee and Sarasota counties. USGS surveyed it at about 1,450 acres; FWC's page says 1,180 with no stated pool elevation, and no agency publishes a depth. A county ordinance caps motors at roughly 20 horsepower and bans water-skiing, so the whole reservoir runs at jon-boat, kayak and small-tiller speed — quiet water, with rules that read as watershed protection rather than park bureaucracy.
Plan around the double concrete ramp in Lake Manatee State Park: gates 8 a.m. to sundown year-round, $5 vehicle entry plus a $4 ramp fee, floating docks and 17 paved trailer spaces. FWC maps a second east ramp off SR 64, but no county source lists it and FWC rates it “Needs Repair” — treat this as a one-ramp lake. The park runs a designated swim area with no lifeguard. A mercury advisory covers the fishery: largemouth bass one meal a month for women of childbearing age and young children. Expect a musty algae stretch in late spring and early summer, and if you run exactly 20 horsepower, call the park at 941-741-3028 first — the published wordings split on whether 20 is in or out.
