Crews Lake is the head of the Pithlachascotee River, which runs about twenty-five miles from here to the Gulf. Water comes in from Jumping Gully and the Masaryktown Canal; a 1940s earthen berm splits the basin into two sub-basins, joined only by a 60-inch pipe when both sides top 51.8 ft NGVD 29 — far above the current stage, so the halves are cut off. No source addresses whether a boat can run downstream into the river, and in June 2026 the river near New Port Richey read 0.0 cfs.
One number decides the trip: SWFWMD's June 2026 Hydrologic Conditions Report put Crews Lake at 44.56 ft NGVD 29 — 6.44 ft below the adopted Minimum Lake Level of 51.0 ft, unchanged from May, 3.86 ft lower than June 2025, and 1.93 ft above the record low of 42.63 ft set in April 2001. FWC's field note on the ramp, dated 11/12/25, reads "Ramps water down a great amount cannot access water at this moment," and the lake has fallen nearly three feet since. The drought is regional — the northern counties got 3.58 inches of rain in June 2026, the 5th percentile. SWFWMD's monthly report is the only public instrument that carries this lake's stage; no Pasco County page posts a level or a ramp status, so check the District's latest report before a trip.

Why is the lake so low?
Crews Lake is the headwaters of the Pithlachascotee River, a karst basin inside a 113-acre Pasco County wilderness park northeast of Spring Hill — and in the summer of 2026 there is very little lake to visit. The basin has been cut in two since the 1940s by an earthen berm, SWFWMD has classified it a stressed lake since 1992, and the District documents sinkholes in and around the lakebed, including dry-season drainage into one north of the berm. The District's own finding is that the water level tracks rainfall, not the wellfield a mile and a half east.
Do not tow a boat here right now: the June 2026 reading was 6.44 ft below the lake's adopted minimum, and FWC's November 2025 field note says the ramp cannot reach water. The county itself does not list a boat ramp at Crews Lake Wilderness Park — its page offers canoe access, a dock and a fishing pier — so treat this as a paddle-and-pier park with a legacy concrete ramp for wetter years. The park stays open around the missing lake, dawn to dusk: trails, boardwalk, observation tower, botanical garden, primitive camping, and free scaled-down train rides the second Saturday of each month, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Stay off the exposed lakebed — this is sinkhole country — and call (727) 861-3038 to ask what the low water has closed.
