SWFWMD's minimum-levels report describes threshold connections — inflow from a wetland to the northeast and from Moody Lake when Moody stages above 104.2 ft, discharge toward Hancock Lake when Middle Lake tops 99.5 ft — but no source describes either as navigable, even by canoe.
SWFWMD has gauged Middle Lake since April 1980 (station STA 198), with a record high of 108.30 ft NGVD in April 1998 and a record low of 96.18 ft in June 2001 — a twelve-foot spread on a shallow sandhill lake. The adopted levels in Rule 40D-8.624 are a High Minimum Lake Level of 102.5 ft and a Minimum Lake Level of 100.2 ft NGVD 29, but there is no current reading to set against them: the lake has no row in SWFWMD's monthly Hydrologic Conditions Report. The regional backdrop is dry — SWFWMD extended its Modified Phase III "Extreme" water-shortage order through October 1, 2026, covering all of Pasco County. Middle Lake is a 200-acre lake in the Blanton sandhill country of northeast Pasco County, about 25 miles from the Land O' Lakes chain lakes it is sometimes confused with. FWC manages the water as the Middle Lake Fish Management Area, which puts the entire lake at idle speed, and the county caps the ramp at 16-foot boats — jonboat, canoe and kayak water by rule. It is shallow and marsh-fringed enough that USGS's own products disagree on what it is: one maps a lake, the other classes the same feature a swamp.
The trip-deciding fact: Pasco County has the park posted closed indefinitely for repairs from Hurricanes Milton and Helene, so call (813) 929-2760 before you hitch up — FWC's ramp inventory still shows it open, but the county maintains the site and its notice governs. When it reopens you get a modest place: one concrete lane, eight grass-and-sand trailer spaces, a fishing pier, a canoe launch, no toilet and no fees, dawn to dusk. FWC writes lake-specific fishing rules here — a 20-fish bluegill and redear aggregate bag with an 8-inch minimum, far tighter than the statewide 50 — the clearest sign this little lake gets real management attention.
