Lake Maggiore Park Boat Ramp

Status is presumed open, not verified open. The City of St. Petersburg lists Lake Maggiore Park among nine ramps on its boat ramps page with no closure notice, but that page is a static directory: the identical “Boat ramp open 24 hours | Park opens 30 minutes before sunrise” line appears on every ramp entry, including Bay Vista Park, which the St. Pete Catalyst reported on 2024-11-02 as remaining “closed indefinitely.” Absence of a notice on that page therefore proves nothing about any ramp. FWC row PI80008JW reads Status “Open for Business” with RampStatusComments and OperationalComments both null — there is no dated field note on this ramp in either direction. Alligators are present. This is a 363-acre urban lake abutting the 400-acre Boyd Hill Nature Preserve. Friends of Salt Creek's newspaper-archive timeline records nuisance alligators removed in 1978 and rising complaints by 2005; more recently WFLA reported St. Petersburg police and FWC officers removing an 11-foot and a 9-foot alligator from Lake Eli, near Dell Holmes Park and Lake Maggiore — a report about Lake Eli, not this lake, offered as neighbourhood context. Parking is unpaved. FWC records ParkingSurface “Not Paved - Grass/Loose Soil/Sand.” On a stormwater lake in a basin the City describes as flood-prone, expect that lot to be soft after heavy rain, and think twice about backing a heavy rig onto it in the wet season.

Active construction in and around this basin through 2028, on the ramp's own access street. The City's Basin C Resiliency Salt Creek Outfall Pump Station project lists “Estimated Completion Year: 2028” and “Estimated Construction Cost: $30 million,” and scopes a new sluice gate “to control the flow of water, to mitigate sea level rise or surge,” a new pump station and force main, a larger intake, and constructed floodplain and wetland. The St. Pete Catalyst reported on 2025-09-19 a wider package — $3.5M Bartlett Lake dredging, a $21M Bartlett Lake/Salt Creek pump station, $6M elevation of MLK Jr. St. S. and a $15M wet-weather bypass, roughly $48.5M through 2028. MLK Jr. St. S. is the ramp's access road. The city's project page publishes no road-closure, lane-closure or detour notices yet, so the traffic impact is unstated — only that the work is on the ramp's street.

Lake Maggiore is a designated impaired waterbody — WBID 1731A, Middle Tampa Bay watershed, per the Tampa Bay Water Atlas, monitored at 20 stations with 21,090 samples logged 1997-02-26 to 2025-12-23. The atlas page does not name the parameter; FDEP's Impaired Waters service does. Queried 2026-07-31, it returns four listings for WBID 1731A — Nutrients (Chlorophyll-a), Nutrients (Total Nitrogen), Nutrients (Total Phosphorus) and Specific Conductance — all in category 4e, "Ongoing Restoration Activities." That is a nutrient listing, not bacteria and not metals, and 4e means the lake is impaired but under an adopted restoration plan rather than awaiting a TMDL. The City of St. Petersburg's 2019 Water Quality Report Card agrees from the other direction, grading all three of its Lake Maggiore stations red for chlorophyll a. Practically: expect an algae-prone urban lake, rinse your gear, and treat this as a water-quality listing rather than a contamination warning.

Motor, horsepower and speed rules on this lake are not settled. None appear in the City's boat ramps page, its Lake Maggiore Park and Boyd Hill pages, the Basin C project page or FWC's boating regulations page, and the St. Petersburg Code of Ordinances is not readable online. The park gate closes at 11 p.m. even though the ramp is designated 24 hours. If you launch late, plan for your tow vehicle and trailer to be in that lot when it closes.

Storm history: the St. Pete Catalyst reported on 2024-11-02 that “Lake Maggiore Park and Dell Homes Park were among the hardest hit” city parks after Helene and Milton, with the playground among eleven closed and damage to “the subsurface … the padding and the turf,” and roughly 600 trees lost at Boyd Hill. The City's park page currently lists a playground among the amenities but carries no dated status note, so whether it reopened is unconfirmed from City pages. The ramp was not among the ramps that reporting named as closed.

Crowding No traffic counts for this ramp from any agency source, so this is expectation, not measurement. What is measurable: one lane, eight trailer spaces, on grass and loose soil, inside a city park that also has a playground and rentable picnic shelters putting non-boaters in the same lot. Eight spaces is the constraint — a weekend morning fills that, and no overflow trailer area is published.

Plan B — if this lot is full For another freshwater launch in Pinellas County: Lake Seminole Park has a five-lane concrete ramp with paved trailer parking ($6/day, cashless pay-by-plate, Pinellas County), and John Chesnut Sr. Park puts you on Lake Tarpon. The City of St. Petersburg lists eight other municipal ramps on the same page as this one, but the page does not say which waters they reach and none is on Lake Maggiore — and the St. Pete Catalyst reported on 2024-11-02 that “the Bay Vista remains closed indefinitely”, without saying the boat ramp specifically.
