Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Single Lane Patience
One lane means you're waiting if even a couple boats are ahead of you. Weekend mornings from Memorial Day through Labor Day, expect a 15-20 minute backup. Weekday launches are a breeze.
Parking Layout Quirk
The 20 trailer spots aren't right at the ramp — you follow a driveway east of the launch to find them. First-timers miss it and end up blocking the ramp area. Once you know, it's fine, but signage could be better.
Two Launch Options
There's a second, smaller launch on the west side of the park better suited for kayaks and paddleboards. If you're hand-carrying anything, skip the main ramp entirely and use that one — less congestion and easier water access.
Dam Pond Conditions
Water levels are controlled by Alcona Dam, so they stay fairly consistent through the season. The pond is calm and protected, great for smaller boats. Watch for shallow spots along the western shoreline — stick to the main channel heading out from the ramp and you'll be fine.
Cell Service Dead Zone
Don't count on your phone out here. Service is spotty to nonexistent across most of the park. If you need to check weather radar or contact someone, head up near the main office where they have Wi-Fi. Plan your trip details before you arrive.
