Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Watch Your GPS Route
Do NOT let Google Maps send you down Baker Grade to get here. It's a deep sand two-track that will wreck your trailer and possibly strand you. Stick to the main forest roads — the correct approach is well-maintained dirt, but Baker Grade is 3.5 miles of narrow nightmare, especially if you're towing anything.
Small Ramp, Small Boats
This is a single-lane launch meant for cartop boats, canoes, and kayaks — maybe a small jonboat on a light trailer. Don't plan on backing a big rig down here. With only 6 trailer spots, even a modest Saturday crowd can eat up every inch of space.
Fishing Is Tough
Kingston Lake is gorgeous but don't expect hot fishing. The lake is clear and quiet, and you'll see sunfish cruising around, but actually catching anything of size has been consistently disappointing. It's a better paddling lake than a fishing lake, honestly.
No Cell, No Signal
There is zero cell service out here — not weak, not spotty, just gone. Plan your trip before you arrive. If you're meeting someone or need to check weather, do it back in Munising. It's part of the charm, but you need to know going in.
Fills Faster Than You'd Think
First-come, first-serve campground with only 16 sites, and it's a short drive from Pictured Rocks. Sites get snatched up by early afternoon, even midweek in summer. If you want to camp and launch here, arrive before noon or gamble on a Monday morning checkout window.
