Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Remote & Quiet
This is deep UP territory — Alger County backwoods with almost no traffic. If you want a lake to yourself on a Tuesday, this is the kind of place where that actually happens.
Small Water Only
Nawakwa is a small lake, so don't haul anything huge up here. A 16-footer or a kayak is the sweet spot. One lane, ten trailer spots — that's all you need because you're unlikely to see more than a couple other rigs.
Road In Can Surprise You
The access road is managed by PRD out of Newberry, not exactly a high-priority maintenance route. Expect seasonal ruts, especially in spring after snowmelt. Higher-clearance vehicles and trailers with decent tires will thank you.
Worth The Drive For Solitude
Compared to the bigger, more accessible launches on places like AuTrain or Indian Lake, Nawakwa trades convenience for peace and quiet. No crowds, no wake boats, just clean water and fish. That's the whole point of coming here.
