Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Nearly Invisible Signage
This place is notoriously hard to find, both from the road and from the river. There's essentially zero signage on the water, so if you're doing a one-way paddle or float trip, you can easily overshoot the landing and end up in muck downstream. Pin it on your GPS before you go — don't rely on seeing it from the water.
Shallow When Low
The lower Kalamazoo can drop enough to make launching anything with real draft a headache. If you're running a deeper-hull powerboat, check levels before you commit. Pontoons and shallow-running boats are fine most of the year, and kayaks obviously have no issues. Spring runoff gives you the most room.
Rarely Crowded
One lane and 40 trailer spots sounds tight on paper, but this launch just doesn't draw crowds. Even on summer weekends you're unlikely to wait. It's a quiet, no-hassle spot — great if you want to avoid the circus at busier ramps closer to Lake Michigan.
River Run to Lake Michigan
You can actually take a powerboat from here all the way out to Lake Michigan, and the trip is worth doing. Just keep your speed reasonable and watch for floating logs — the lower Kalamazoo pushes debris downstream regularly, especially after storms. Stick to shallow-draft boats for the run.
Outhouse After Dark
There's a pit latrine on-site that's honestly not bad by DNR outhouse standards — minimal odor, reasonably maintained. That said, bring a headlamp if you're here at dawn or dusk because there's no lighting. You do not want to navigate that thing by phone flashlight alone.
