Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Shallow At Ramp
The water at the launch is genuinely shallow — plan on a small jon boat or kayak, not a deep-V. You'll be scraping bottom if you try to launch anything with real draft, especially by midsummer.
Weeds Take Over
Spring is your window here. Once summer hits, the weeds choke the launch area and most of the impoundment. By July you're muscling through vegetation just to get off the ramp. Early season topwater fishing can be surprisingly good before it turns into a salad bowl.
Periodic Drawdowns
They drain the whole impoundment roughly every six years to let the plant matter decompose and reset the ecosystem. If you show up and there's no water, that's why. Worth checking with the Allegan Field Office before making the drive.
Catch And Release Only
Fish here but don't keep them to eat — there's a contamination issue. The bass fishing can be legit, especially in spring off the launch area, but this is strictly a sport fishery for you.
Tiny But Peaceful
Four trailer spots and one lane, so this isn't handling a crowd. The upside is almost nobody comes here. It's a quiet impoundment that doubles as a solid birding spot. Perfect for a solo morning with a canoe and a rod, not a weekend group outing.
