Fishing Deep Lake

Barry County, Michigan · DNR Survey 1988

Scout's Fishing Notes

Deep Lake offers excellent panfishing with bluegills averaging 6.4 inches and yellow perch reaching 11.1 inches, both growing above state average. The bluegill population ranks 4.8 out of 7 for quality, producing larger fish than most southern Michigan lakes due to favorable growth and survival conditions. Yellow perch show exceptional growth at +1.2 above state average, with 97% reaching legal size. The lake's two-story structure supports both warmwater species in the upper 25 feet and trout in cooler depths. Wild brown trout naturally reproduce from the high-quality coldwater inlet and grow very rapidly, with fish reaching nearly 20 inches. DNR stocks 1,300 yearling browns annually to supplement this natural reproduction. Northern pike are a recent addition, with a 20-pound fish caught in 1989, and may be responsible for the decline of rainbow trout stocking success in the mid-1980s. The thermocline sits between 10-20 feet, with good oxygen levels down to 25 feet making mid-water trout fishing viable. Bottom composition is primarily sand and marl shoals covering 30-40% of the lake, with sparse vegetation except cattails and rushes. The lake receives light fishing pressure and offers crystal-clear water with 13-foot visibility. Limited development and state ownership of surrounding land ensures long-term habitat protection. Fish the shallow sand/marl shoals for panfish and deeper water for trout, with browns likely holding near the thermocline or around the inlet area.
