Fishing Crystal Lake

Benzie County, Michigan · DNR Survey 2014

Scout's Fishing Notes

Crystal Lake offers one of Michigan's most unique inland fisheries, anchored by exceptional Lake Trout that grow well above state average thanks to abundant rainbow smelt forage. The lake hosts Michigan's original rainbow smelt population - introduced in 1912, these fish eventually colonized the entire upper Great Lakes. Lake Trout average 21.5 inches with fish up to 32 inches, supported by annual stocking of 60,000 yearlings. The fishery is rare enough that winter ice anglers alone generate over $400,000 annually to the local economy. Rock Bass dominate the catch with 43 Master Angler entries, indicating exceptional trophy potential in this deep, oligotrophic lake. Smallmouth Bass fishing is outstanding with growth index +0.9 and fish reaching 21 inches. Yellow Perch provide steady action year-round despite slower growth, with nearly 24,000 harvested during winter 2004. Crystal Lake uniquely hosts one of only two populations of landlocked Coho Salmon in Michigan's inland waters. The deep, cold water (maximum 165 feet, average 70 feet) over sand and marl substrate creates ideal habitat for coldwater species. Rainbow Trout are stocked annually but may also reproduce naturally in Cold Creek. Northern Pike are present but uncommon, though they grow well when present. Lake Whitefish support a popular ice fishery and nearshore fishing in spring and fall. The lake's connection to Lake Michigan via the Betsie River allows occasional salmon and steelhead to jump the control dam and enter the system.

Ice Fishing

Crystal Lake's significant depth — around 165 feet — means it can be slow to freeze and ice conditions vary considerably across the lake. Shallower bays and the east end near Beulah freeze more reliably than the deep center. Always check local ice reports before venturing out.

DNR Management Direction

Continue annual stocking of 60,000 yearling Lake Trout and 20,000 yearling Rainbow Trout. Monitor for Cisco population decline. Conduct year-round creel census to better assess angler harvest and economic value. Protect remaining riparian wetlands.
