Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Tiny Parking Window
Six trailer spots — that's it. If you're pulling in on a summer weekend, get there early morning or you're out of luck. This is inside a busy campground, so campers with rental kayaks and canoes are competing for the same waterfront real estate.
Small Lake, Shallow Edges
Turtle Lake is a small, clear lake but it gets mucky and weedy fast once you're outside the main swimming area. The ramp works fine for kayaks, canoes, and small jon boats, but don't expect to put anything big on this water. Horses from the equestrian camp sometimes come through the launch area too, so watch for that.
GPS Will Betray You
Do not trust your GPS to get you here. It'll route you down some bizarre back roads. Follow the campground's own directions from their website or you'll be cursing on some unmarked two-track wondering where you went wrong.
ORV Noise Factor
The campground caters to the ORV and side-by-side crowd since it's near trail systems. Weekends can get loud with dirt bikes and ATVs buzzing around constantly. If you're looking for a peaceful morning paddle, aim for a weekday or get on the water before 9 AM.
Great Base Camp Though
The launch itself is basic — one lane, minimal parking, vintage 1950s infrastructure — but the location is solid. You're only a few miles from the Platte River, 25 minutes from Traverse City, and close to Frankfort. If you're camping here and just want to get a small boat or kayak on calm water for a few hours, it does the job.
