Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Still Evolving
The old dam was removed and the DNR took over in 2022, so this site is still being developed. Landscaping and amenities are works in progress — don't expect a finished park. It's functional for launching, but bare-bones beyond that.
River Access Only
This is a single-lane launch on the Dowagiac River, so you're talking small boats, canoes, and kayaks. Don't try to back a big bass boat down here — the river is narrow and shallow in stretches. Perfect for jon boats and tubes heading downstream.
Parking No Problem
Fifteen trailer spots and I've never seen it close to full. Even on summer weekends you'll find a spot. It's a low-traffic launch compared to anything on the St. Joseph River proper.
Tubing Put-In
This is a popular starting point for tubing runs down the Dowagiac. The current is gentle enough to be relaxing but steady enough to keep you moving. If you're here on a hot Saturday afternoon, expect a few groups milling around the launch area with floats.
Fishing Is Decent
The stretch near the old dam site holds some fish, and bank fishing access is easy right from the launch area. Since the dam removal the river is restoring to a more natural flow, which should only improve things over time. A few picnic tables are in but no grills or restrooms yet — pack accordingly.
