Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Paddle-Only Launch
There's no real boat ramp here — forget about trailers entirely. This is a carry-in spot for kayaks, canoes, and SUPs. You can get a small craft in without much trouble, but there's no dock, so you're stepping right into the riverbank.
Low Bridge Hazard
If you head right toward Lake Michigan, there's a bridge about 10 minutes downstream with only 3-4 feet of clearance. Stand-up paddlers will need to duck or dismount. Even seated kayakers should be aware at higher water levels.
Parking Fills Fast
You're looking at maybe 15 spots along Red Arrow Highway and that's it. On a nice summer weekend, especially Saturday mornings, you might be circling. Get there early or have a backup plan — there's no overflow lot.
Water Levels Run Low
By late summer the river can get surprisingly shallow and tea-stained. It's still navigable in a kayak, but don't expect deep, clear water. Spring and early summer are your best bet for a good paddle in either direction.
