Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Kayak-Only Launch
There's no real boat ramp here — no trailer path to the water at all. This is strictly a carry-in spot for kayaks and canoes. If you're trailering a powerboat, you need to go elsewhere.
Turnip Rock Gateway
This is one of the go-to launch points for paddling to Turnip Rock. Heading left along the shore, expect about an hour to 90 minutes to reach it depending on current. The return trip is noticeably faster — maybe 40 minutes with the current at your back.
Extremely Shallow Water
The lake stays thigh-deep or less for a solid 150 yards out from shore. Great if you're wading with little kids, but it means you'll be dragging your kayak a bit before you're truly floating, especially in low-water years. As of spring 2025, levels are the lowest they've been in a long time.
State Park Pass Required
This is administered by Port Crescent State Park, and you need a valid state park pass to park here. Only a couple of designated spots, but on weekdays you'll rarely have trouble. Summer weekends — especially when the Turnip Rock crowd shows up — it gets tight fast.
Sand Flies And Debris
The beach itself is sandy and easy on bare feet, but it's not maintained and collects natural debris. The real nuisance is the sand flies — they're small but relentless. Bring repellent or you'll be miserable gearing up on shore.
