Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Parking Fills Fast
Only 16 trailer spots, and on a nice Saturday in July you'll find them taken by 8 AM. There's limited overflow along the access road, but it's tight — if you're towing anything over 20 feet, showing up early isn't optional.
Exposed To North Wind
The harbor faces northeast into open Lake Huron with minimal breakwall protection. When the wind swings north, even 10-15 mph gusts make loading and unloading a wrestling match. Check the wind direction before you commit — if it's blowing out of the north, consider launching at Cheboygan instead.
Ramp Is Solid
Two lanes, concrete in good shape, and decent depth at the end even in late summer. You can comfortably launch a 22-footer here without worrying about scraping. It's one of the better-maintained ramps on this stretch of Huron north of Rogers City.
Remote But Worth It
Hammond Bay is tucked off US-23 between Cheboygan and Rogers City — easy to miss if you're not looking. The access road is paved but narrow. What you get for the drive is a quieter launch with far less boat traffic than the bigger harbors, and the fishing along the shoals out here is seriously underrated.
