Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Channel Tight Spot
The harbor channel is narrow enough that boats over 50 feet may need to go stern-first to get out. If you're running anything big, plan your approach carefully — it's not a place to make a wide turn.
Low Water Headaches
Lake levels have been an issue here. The docks don't extend far enough to comfortably accommodate larger boats during low-water years, so if you're in a deeper-draft vessel, check what you're working with before committing.
Rocky Beach Warning
The beach looks inviting but it's gravel and rocks more than soft sand. Barefoot walking is uncomfortable, and wading in can be rough on the feet. Great for rock hunting, not so great for lounging.
Breakwall Hazard
The north-facing side of the breakwall has a broken ladder that's been neglected for a while. Kids jump off and can't get back up — it's a real problem. The wall also has cracks and uneven sections, so watch your footing if you walk out, especially at night since there are no lights on the pier.
Better Than Lexington
Four lanes, 74 trailer spots, and it rarely feels crowded even on decent weather days. If Lexington is a zoo on weekends, Port Sanilac is the quieter alternative with the same Lake Huron access. Fish cleaning station is indoor with stainless tables and running water — one of the nicer setups on the Thumb. Year-round use too; it's a solid ice fishing launch in winter.
