Tiny Lot, Plan Ahead
Eight trailer spots fill fast, especially on summer weekends. If you're arriving after 9 AM on a Saturday, you might be circling. The campground itself is big but the actual launch parking is separate and very limited.
Single Lane Patience
One lane means you're waiting if someone ahead of you is fumbling with their trailer. Weekday mornings are the sweet spot — you'll practically have it to yourself. Weekends in July and August can back things up quickly with kayak renters mixed in with trailer boats.
Tannin-Stained Water
This is a blackwater river, so visibility is essentially zero. You cannot see submerged obstacles, and there are plenty — logs, root wads, and sandbars shift around near the mouth. Go slow until you know the channel. The river is deceptively shallow in stretches near Whitefish Bay, especially late summer.
Wind Off the Bay
Once you get near the river mouth at Whitefish Bay, the wind off Lake Superior can turn things nasty in a hurry. The river itself is glass-calm and sheltered, but transition to the bay is exposed. Small boats under 16 feet should think twice on windy days — whitecaps build fast out there.
Remote but Worth It
You're 15 miles from the actual falls and about 10 miles from Paradise for fuel and supplies. The nearest alternative launch options are sparse up here, so this is really your spot for accessing the lower Tahquamenon and the bay. Bring everything you need — there's no running back for forgotten gear without burning half an hour.
