Fishing Eight Point Lake

Clare County, Michigan · DNR Survey 2010

Scout's Fishing Notes

Eight Point Lake's standout fishery is walleye, with excellent growth (+3.6 index) and 83% of fish reaching legal size - supplemental netting found 94% of walleye were 15+ inches, ranging up to 27 inches. The pumpkinseed sunfish population is exceptional, averaging 7.3 inches with 79% harvestable and above-average growth (+0.5 index), likely thriving on the lake's abundant snail population. Bluegill dominate the catch at 35% but grow slowly (-1.2 index), though the population earned a satisfactory Schneider Index rating of 4.0 with good numbers of larger fish for harvest. The 387-acre lake is mostly shallow with 75% under 25 feet deep, featuring sand bottom in shoals and pulpy peat in deeper areas. Northern pike present a management challenge - they're abundant but severely stunted with growth index of -3.9, sexually mature at small sizes, and none reaching the 24-inch legal limit despite ages up to 8. Largemouth bass numbers are high but growth is very slow (-2.5 index) with fish stacking up between 9-13 inches and only 4% reaching legal 14-inch size. The lake supports good dissolved oxygen throughout the 22-foot water column with no thermal stratification, making fish accessible at all depths. Bottom structure includes sand in the shallows with vegetation like bulrushes, pondweeds, and Chara, plus 296 docks providing additional fish habitat. The Lake Association has actively stocked various species since 1997, particularly fall fingerling walleye that show superior survival compared to DNR spring fingerlings. Water clarity is excellent with 11-foot Secchi depth and oligotrophic status, supporting a diverse fish community of 16 species. Black crappie are scarce but all fish captured were harvestable size with good growth. Yellow perch suffer poor recruitment with few surviving past age 3 to harvestable size, likely due to predation pressure.

Ice Fishing

Eight Point Lake freezes reliably in winter and sees regular ice fishing activity. Anglers report catching sunfish, crappie, perch, and bass through the ice. As always, check current ice thickness before heading out — low water levels in recent years may affect freeze patterns near shore.

DNR Management Direction

Continue warm and cool water species management. New prescription recommends biennial walleye stocking at 50 per acre (19,400 fish) using DNR spring fingerlings. Northern pike population is stunted and abundant but no regulation changes possible until statewide review is complete. Self-sustaining panfish and bass require no active management.
