Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
No Real Ramp
There's no paved ramp here — zero lanes. This is a carry-in spot for kayaks and canoes only. If you're trailering a motorboat, head to Sleepy Hollow State Park's main launch instead.
Deadfall Obstacles
Expect downed trees and brush spanning the full width of the river in spots. You'll be climbing over or dragging around logs on some stretches, so bring a short boat you can maneuver easily and plan for slower going than you'd think.
Water Level Gamble
The Looking Glass runs shallow — mostly 2-4 feet deep — and later in summer it can drop low enough that you're scraping bottom even in a kayak. Spring and early summer after good rain is your best window. Flip side: the site floods periodically, so after heavy rain the access area can be underwater entirely.
Parking Is Tight
Three trailer spots is all you get. For kayak day trips that's usually fine since most people just unload and move their car, but on a nice fall weekend when the leaf colors pop, even that small lot can fill up fast.
Best For Lazy Floats
This river shines as a mellow paddle-and-float destination, not a fishing honey hole. The water is surprisingly clear — almost gin-clear on calm days — and the current is gentle enough for tubing except in spring when the bends pick up real push. Great fall color run if you time it right.
