Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
No Trailer Launch
There's no real boat ramp here — zero lanes, zero trailer parking. This is a carry-in situation only. Canoes, kayaks, and small inflatables are what you're bringing. If you need a proper ramp for a trailered boat, look elsewhere on the Au Sable.
Long Carry to Water
The DNR isn't kidding about the 'long trail to northeast launch.' You're hauling your canoe or kayak a decent walk through the woods to reach the river. There's a second put-in north of the parking area that's a shorter carry, so scout both before you commit to dragging gear down the longer path.
Fly Fishing Holy Water
This stretch of the Au Sable is catch-and-release only — one of the premier fly fishing sections in the country. The river here is wadeable and relatively shallow, which is great for anglers but means you're floating in skinny water. Keep your draft minimal and watch for gravel bars.
Paddle Trip Staging
This works best as a put-in for multi-day paddle trips down the Au Sable. Sandy soil around camp means you won't be slogging through mud loading gear, even after heavy rain. Camp the night before, load up in the morning, and you're on the water without fighting weekend crowds.
Tick Season Is Real
Spring through early summer, the ticks here are absolutely relentless. If you're bushwhacking down to the river or carrying a boat through the trail, do a thorough check afterward. Dogs too — every single one of them will pick up passengers.
