Fishing Jones Lake

Crawford County, Michigan · DNR Survey 2012

Scout's Fishing Notes

Jones Lake transformed from a mediocre warmwater fishery into a quality destination through restrictive regulations and strategic walleye stocking. The 42.5-acre lake stratifies seasonally with oxygen depleted below 20 feet, making it unsuitable for trout despite past attempts. Quality Lake regulations implemented in 2006 have dramatically improved size structure - bluegill now meeting RSD-preferred and memorable goals with fish up to 11 inches, while largemouth bass grow above state average (+1.6 growth index) with excellent age structure up to age-9. Northern pike reach impressive sizes up to 38 inches despite poor growth rates (-2.6 growth index), suggesting the population benefits from reduced harvest pressure. Walleye stocking since 1991 established a successful predator fishery growing at state average rates, with fish ranging 19-29 inches in recent surveys. The lake sits on glacial outwash deposits with sand, organic, and marl bottom in the Au Sable State Forest, offering 42 campsites with concrete boat ramp access. Bottom composition and rusty crayfish abundance provide excellent habitat structure. Alkalinity ranges 92-147 mg/l indicating medium productivity potential. Fishing is restricted to June 1 through September 30 with catch and release only using artificial lures, designed specifically to maximize fish size and angling quality. Historical surveys dating to 1924 showed persistent problems with stunted panfish until the combination of walleye predation and restrictive regulations created the current quality fishery.

DNR Management Direction

Continue Quality Lake regulations (June 1-Sept 30 season, catch and release only, artificial lures only) and walleye fingerling stocking every 3-4 years at 100 per acre to maintain predator base and quality fishery.
