Fishing KP Lake

Crawford County, Michigan · DNR Survey 2022

Scout's Fishing Notes

KP Lake offers a classic northern Michigan bass-bluegill fishery in a pristine 109-acre oligotrophic setting. The thermocline at 20 feet and good dissolved oxygen to 19 feet means fish will hold in the deeper water during summer stratification. Largemouth bass dominate the predator community with fish ranging 4-21 inches, though most are under the 14-inch size limit and growing slightly slower than average. The real gems are two northern pike in the 37-38 inch range that surprised biologists - these trophy fish are growing well above state averages despite limited spawning habitat. Bluegill provide the main panfish action with good size distribution from 1-9 inches and above-average growth, though the absence of larger fish suggests heavy harvest pressure on the keepers. Pumpkinseed are less abundant but growing exceptionally well, averaging a half-inch larger than statewide norms. Yellow perch struggle here, running a full inch smaller than average with most being juveniles. The abundant forage base of mimic shiners and bluntnose minnows - comprising 94% of the fish community - helps support acceptable growth rates despite the lake's low productivity. With 60% of the lake 10 feet or less over sand and marl bottom, focus shallow structure fishing around the 134 submerged trees scattered throughout the system. The electric motor only restriction keeps fishing pressure manageable, and minimal shoreline development maintains excellent natural habitat. Historical surveys show this has been a consistent warmwater fishery since the 1940s, with current fish community health typical of quality northern Michigan natural lakes.

Ice Fishing

KP Lake is shallow, so it likely freezes early and solidly in a typical Crawford County winter. Ice fishing is possible, though given reports of declining fish populations, expectations should be modest. Always check ice thickness — shallow lakes can also develop weak spots from springs or current.

DNR Management Direction

Maintain standard statewide fishing regulations. Minimize shoreline development and armoring to preserve natural habitat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What fish are in KP Lake?

KP Lake has historically held smallmouth bass and bluegill. However, multiple recent reviews note that fishing has deteriorated significantly due to overfishing, with smaller and fewer fish being caught. It's still a quiet spot to wet a line, but don't expect reliable action.
