Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Gravel Road In
You're on gravel for a good stretch getting in here, and the roads can get rutted out after heavy rain. Take it slow if you're pulling a trailer — no signage once you leave the main road, so know your turns before you go.
Small Boats Only
This is a kayak-and-jon-boat kind of launch. One lane, three trailer spots, and the ramp is basic. Don't try to muscle anything over 16 feet in here — you'll regret it on the turnaround alone.
Remote & Dark
There's essentially nothing out here. No lights, no facilities to speak of. That's the charm — the mine ponds are stunning and the fishing pressure is almost nonexistent. But plan accordingly: bring everything you need because there's no running back to town quickly.
Four Ponds, Easy Confusion
Groveland has four mine ponds total with launches scattered around. West Pond is just one of them. First-timers regularly end up at the wrong pond because there's minimal signage differentiating them. Pull up satellite view on your phone before you lose signal.
Bass & Pike Water
West Pond holds bass, bluegill, northern pike, and muskie. The old mine ponds are deep with sharp drop-offs close to shore — great structure but keep an eye on your depth finder. Weed growth can get thick by midsummer near the launch area.
