Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
No Real Ramp
There are zero designated launch lanes here — you're basically dragging a canoe or small jon boat down a steep, uneven bank. Someone described it as 'kinda vertical' and that's about right. Forget anything bigger than a 12-footer unless you want a workout.
Brutal Access Road
The dirt road in is washboard hell for a solid 2 miles. At 15 mph you'll be rattling your teeth loose, and if you're towing a trailer or camper, think twice — this road punishes anything that isn't a truck or SUV. Low-clearance vehicles and heavy rigs should stay away.
No Motors Allowed
House Lake is paddle and electric only — no gas motors. That keeps it dead calm, which is great for SUPs, kayaks, and fly fishing. Expect mostly bluegill and pumpkinseed, and don't get your hopes up on size. The lake gets weedy by midsummer, especially the south half.
Hard To Find
Signage out here is confusing. House Lake, Trout Lake, and a third small lake campground are all clustered within a couple miles, and none are well-marked. Plug in coordinates before you lose cell signal, because you will lose it. Nearly everyone gets turned around the first time.
Weekend Crowd Gamble
Weekdays and early fall are peaceful — you might have the lake to yourself. But summer weekends can turn into a loud party scene with fireworks, big groups, and trash left everywhere. If you're coming for solitude, aim for midweek or post-Labor Day.
