Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Barely a Launch
There's no real ramp here — just old planks buried under grass turf. You can muscle a small jon boat or kayak down to the water, but backing a trailer in is a genuine challenge. Don't bring anything bigger than a 12-footer unless you want a bad day.
Closed in Fall
The site is completely closed for boating September 1st through November 30th. That lines up perfectly with duck season, so if you're thinking about motoring out to hunt waterfowl, you're out of luck from this access point.
Barely Any Parking
Two trailer spots. That's it. If someone's already there, you're done. On weekends during summer the campground traffic adds to the congestion, so showing up early matters more than usual.
River Conditions
The Maple here is more backwater than river — wide, slow, and stagnant at times, especially in late summer when it gets a noticeable smell. Very little current to speak of. Great for kayaking and birding, but don't expect a clean-flowing stream experience.
Unit B Is Better
If you actually want to launch a boat with a trailer, head to Unit B instead — it has a proper ramp. Unit C is really best suited for hand-launching kayaks or canoes. The 1.5-hour paddle downstream to the French Road DNR launch at Unit B is a solid float if you set up a shuttle.
