Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
No Real Ramp
Zero lanes here — there's no boat ramp in the traditional sense. You're hand-launching kayaks, canoes, or small inflatables from the shoreline or off the floating boardwalk/dock that extends about 100 feet into the pond. Don't show up towing a bass boat.
Shallow Weedy Water
Boston Pond is shallow and choked with aquatic plants and water lilies across much of its surface. If you're kayaking or fishing, stick to topwater lures — frogs, Whopper Ploppers — and target the open pockets. Pike, perch, and sunfish are in there, but you'll be navigating weeds constantly.
Easy To Miss
It's right off Highway 41 just south of the Houghton County airport turnoff, but there's no big sign screaming 'boat launch.' Look for Electric Park Road to access the back side of the pond, or take the main entrance with the pavilion. Either way, first-timers tend to drive past it.
Almost Never Crowded
Four trailer spots is all there is for parking, but it hardly matters — this place is practically deserted most days. Even on summer weekends you'll likely have the pond to yourself. It's a hidden gem tucked between Calumet and Houghton that most people blow right past.
Night Launch Worthy
This is one of the better spots in the Keweenaw for paddling under the northern lights or stargazing from the water. Low light pollution thanks to its tucked-away location, and the pond is calm enough that a late-evening paddle feels completely safe. Bring a headlamp for the carry-in.
