Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Silted In Bad
The ramp is filling in with sand and mud — it's gotten progressively worse. If you're running anything with real draft, you might not even get off the trailer without grinding. Shallow water right at the launch, especially mid-to-late summer when levels drop.
Fairground Maze
You have to drive through the Ionia Fairgrounds to reach the ramp, and the first time you do it you'll probably take a wrong turn. There's a gate but it's supposedly always open. During fair week in July, I'd plan on it being a circus getting in and out — if they even let you through.
Zero Trailer Parking
There are no designated trailer spots here. You're parking wherever you can find flat ground near the ramp. If someone else shows up with a rig, it gets awkward fast. This is really a one-truck-and-trailer kind of spot.
Small Boats Only
With one lane, no real parking, and the silting problem, this launch works best for jon boats, canoes, and kayaks. Trying to put a 20-foot walleye boat in here is going to test your patience and your prop. The Grand has better-maintained launches upstream and down if you're running anything bigger.
