Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Rocks East of Ramp
If you head east (downstream) from the launch, it gets shallow fast with rocks lurking just below the surface. Learned that one the hard way — take it slow until you're well clear of the ramp area.
Steeper Than Expected
The ramp grade is noticeably steeper than most Grand River launches. Not a dealbreaker, but something to keep in mind if you're backing a heavier boat down, especially when water levels are low and you're reaching for depth.
Gate Closed Feb–April
The road into the Flat River State Game Area gets gated shut from February through April. Don't plan a spring steelhead trip here without checking — you'll drive all the way out on gravel only to find a locked gate.
Low Water Surprises
During dry stretches, the river gets painfully shallow right at the launch. If you're running anything with a prop, late summer can be dicey. Kayaks and canoes are fine year-round, but jet-drive or shallow-draft is the safer call for powered boats.
Gravel Road Advantage
The access road is all gravel, which is actually a huge plus during high water. When the Grand floods and every paved ramp in Kent County turns into a mud pit, you can still get in and out here without sinking to your axles.
