Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Weed Choked Lake
Morrow Lake has a serious vegetation problem. Expect thick moss and weed mats across much of the surface, especially from midsummer on. Kayaks handle it fine, but if you're running a prop, you'll be clearing weeds constantly. The lake has never fully recovered since they drained and refilled it years ago.
Shallow Opposite Shore
The side of the lake opposite the dam is dangerously shallow — shallow enough to bottom out a boat with any kind of draft. There's nothing posted to warn you, so stick to the deeper water near the dam side until you've figured out the contours.
Steep Single Lane
One lane, and it's noticeably steep. If your tow vehicle doesn't have great traction, a wet day could make retrieval interesting. The ramp surface isn't the cleanest either, so take a look before you commit. Works fine for kayaks and smaller boats, but I wouldn't bring anything over 18 feet here.
Bluegill Factory
If you just want to put a kid on fish, the rebuilt dock is solid for bluegill and sunfish. Crawlers will get you into bass and pike too. Catfish and carp run big in here. Just know — this is a warm, slow-moving impoundment with a history that includes an oil spill, so most locals practice catch-and-release.
Bring Bug Spray
The mosquitoes at Morrow are legendary. The swampy shoreline and standing vegetation breed them by the millions. The pit toilets are rough — usually out of TP and full of bugs. It's a quiet, peaceful spot if you can handle the company.
