Fishing Pratt Lake

Kent County, Michigan · 28 ft max depth · DNR Survey 2021

Scout's Fishing Notes

Pratt Lake is a classic example of an overpopulated bass fishery that needs angler intervention. The 128 largemouth bass captured had only 2% meeting the current 14-inch size limit, with most fish severely stunted due to competition. Bass growth is well below average with a -1.7 growth index, meaning they're growing much slower than typical Michigan bass. The fish community is heavily skewed toward predators at 70% of total biomass, compared to the healthy 20-50% range. Bluegills are more encouraging with 247 fish captured and a satisfactory Schneider Index score of 4, though they're also growing slightly below average. The shallow 150-acre lake has extensive vegetation and organic "muck" bottom substrate that creates excellent habitat but supports too many fish. Historically dominated by bullheads, the lake has transformed dramatically since 1986 when bass and bluegills weren't even captured. Northern pike are present but scarce, with only 3 fish including one impressive 34-incher. The lake's history of winterkills appears to have lessened, allowing age-8 bass to survive. Water clarity is limited to 1-2 feet in shallow areas. The DNR boat launch accommodates small boats best due to shallow water and mucky substrate. Aggressive bass harvest is strongly encouraged to rebalance this fishery - every bass under 14 inches should be kept to help the remaining fish grow larger.

Ice Fishing

At 28 feet max depth and 180 acres, Pratt Lake should freeze reliably in a typical Michigan winter. Always check ice thickness before heading out, especially early and late season.

DNR Management Direction

DNR recommends liberalizing bass regulations to 10-inch minimum with 5-fish bag limit and encouraging harvest to reduce population density and improve size structure. Also planning boat launch improvements.
