Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Small But Scenic
This is a proper hidden gem in the Keweenaw. One lane and only 8 trailer spots, so you're not dealing with crowds — but you're also out of luck if a couple trucks with trailers beat you there on a Saturday morning.
Keep It Small
Best suited for smaller boats — 16 feet and under is the sweet spot. The ramp is functional but compact, and the lake itself is a quieter inland body that doesn't need a big rig. There's a dock to tie off while you park.
The Island
Make the run out to the island if you can. It's a fantastic spot to pull up and explore or even camp, and it's close enough that you don't need much boat to get there. One of the few inland Keweenaw lakes where you get that kind of feature.
Fall Is Prime Time
If you time it right in late September or early October, the color surrounding this lake is absolutely unreal. The small islands and shoreline hardwoods light up. Worth the drive even if you're not launching — but even better from the water.
Vault Toilet, No Frills
There's a vault toilet on site that's kept in decent shape by Fort Wilkins staff. No potable water, no fish cleaning station, nothing fancy. Pack in what you need and plan accordingly.
