Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Water Levels Fluctuate
This is a reservoir, so water levels can swing quite a bit depending on the season. Late summer and fall can get noticeably low — if you're running a deeper-draft boat, pay attention to where you're motoring, especially around the island shallows.
Island Exploration Gold
Over a thousand acres with a bunch of small islands scattered throughout. You can spend a full day kayaking or motoring island to island. Some have little clearings and fire pits — perfect for a shore lunch with fresh walleye or northern pike. It feels way more remote than it actually is.
Parking Is Tight
Only 11 trailer spots, and this place is popular with both fishing boats and kayakers. On a Saturday morning in July you might find it full by 9 AM. If you're trailering anything bigger than a 16-footer, get there early or plan a weekday trip.
Wind Exposure
That open water and the island layout can funnel wind hard on certain days. If it's blowing out of the west, the main body gets choppy fast. Small boats and canoes should stick closer to the sheltered east side near the islands when it kicks up.
Quiet Gem, Not A Secret
Compared to the bigger Marquette County launches, this place is way less hectic — no jet ski circus, no wake boats. It's managed through Van Riper State Park, so the ramp and facilities are kept in decent shape. The trade-off is that limited parking and the two-lane ramp, so courtesy and patience go a long way on busy weekends.
