Fishing Lake Angeline

Marquette County, Michigan · DNR Survey 2021

Scout's Fishing Notes

Lake Angeline offers a unique fishing experience in a former iron mine pit with extreme depth reaching 162 feet in the old mineshaft area. The fishery is transitioning from its trout-focused past to panfish management, with Black Crappie and other panfish now comprising 82% of the fish community. Trout fishing remains possible but challenging - the 2021 survey found 18 Splake ranging 7-22 inches and one 15-inch Rainbow Trout, representing just 3.4% of the fish population. Prime trout habitat exists from 20-82 feet deep where August temperatures stay below 70°F and dissolved oxygen remains above 5 ppm. Yellow Perch, once dominant and stunted, now make up only 8% of the fishery after decades of competition with stocked trout. The lake's mining heritage created steep drop-offs, deep pockets, and boulder-strewn shoals with sparse vegetation - structure that holds fish but makes them selective. Shore fishing is popular given the extensive grass areas and developed boat launch, though anglers report panfish strike bobber rigs more readily than trout take traditional trout baits. The lake's cold, deep nature and 14-foot clarity make it better suited for trout than most inland lakes, but natural reproduction doesn't occur so stocking is essential for maintaining trout populations. Historical Tiger Muskellunge management produced the state record 31.4-pounder in 1979, and future muskie or walleye introduction remains under consideration given the abundant forage base.

Ice Fishing

Lake Angeline is in the Upper Peninsula near Ishpeming, where winters are long and cold. The lake likely freezes reliably and early. Always check local ice conditions before heading out.

DNR Management Direction

Shifting from trout emphasis to panfish management. Trout stocking will be reduced and only occur when hatchery surplus is available. Walleye and Muskellunge management being considered for future.
