Fishing Lake Michigamme

Marquette County, Michigan · 70 ft max depth · DNR Survey 2017

Scout's Fishing Notes

Lake Michigamme is a 4,360-acre oligotrophic lake that prioritizes quality over quantity - walleye grow slowly but live long, taking 6-7 years to reach the 15-inch minimum versus 4 years statewide. The 2016 survey found 34% of walleye were legal size, with fish ranging 8-30 inches and naturally reproducing consistently since stocking ended in 2002. Northern pike show better than typical Upper Peninsula growth at just 0.2 inches below state average, with 45% exceeding the 24-inch minimum and fish reaching 38 inches. The lake's irregular shoreline features bedrock, cobble, and boulder structure with a thermocline at 24-28 feet and oxygen dropping to 2.7 ppm at 68 feet. Rock bass completely dominate the fishery at 55% of catch by number, averaging 8.2 inches with excellent recruitment and 97% harvestable. Yellow perch numbers remain low despite stocking efforts, with only 11% reaching keeper size. Lake whitefish and white suckers provide an underutilized forage base that could support trophy muskellunge - the lake produced the former state record muskie in 1976. The surrounding nutrient-poor geology limits overall fish density but creates opportunities for trophy fishing. Spiny waterflea invasion since the mid-1990s adds complexity to the food web. Development is moderate with 16.3 dwellings per mile and 8.5% armored shoreline, though Van Riper State Park provides public access on the northeast shore.

Ice Fishing

Lake Michigamme freezes in winter and sees both ice fishing and snowmobile traffic. At 4,292 acres with depths over 70 feet, ice thickness can vary significantly — check conditions carefully near the Peshekee and Spurr river inflows and the Michigamme River outflow, where current keeps ice thin. Wind can also create pressure ridges on a lake this size.

DNR Management Direction

DNR recommends maintaining undeveloped shoreline and woody debris, considering muskellunge stocking to utilize underused forage base, and encouraging angler reports to track population trends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What fish are in Lake Michigamme?

Walleye and yellow perch are the headliners. The lake also holds muskie, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and large numbers of rock bass. The combination of deep water, rocky reefs, and island structure creates diverse habitat. Reviewers specifically mention fat muskies and strong walleye and perch numbers.

Can you ice fish on Lake Michigamme?

Yes. The lake freezes in winter and sees ice fishing activity along with snowmobile traffic. Walleye and perch are the primary ice fishing targets. Given the lake's size, always check ice conditions carefully — wind and current near inflows and outflows can create thin spots.
