Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Single Lane Bottleneck
One lane and 17 trailer spots — on summer weekends this fills up fast. If you're pulling in after 9 AM on a Saturday, expect to wait or circle. Weekdays are a completely different story; you'll practically have the ramp to yourself.
Shallow Near Shore
The water stays shallow for a good distance out from shore. Great for wading and kayak launches, but if you're putting in a deeper-draft boat, you'll want to power through that flat slowly. Later in summer with lower water levels it can get even skinnier right at the ramp.
Winter Access Gamble
The park is technically year-round, but don't count on the road to the launch being plowed after a fresh snowfall. If you're planning an ice fishing trip, call ahead to confirm they've actually cleared a path. I've shown up to unplowed roads more than once.
Big Lake, Worth the Hassle
Lake Michigamme is over 4,200 acres with depths past 70 feet — serious water for the central UP. Once you're out, navigation is well-marked and there's plenty of room to spread out. For a lake this size, a single-lane ramp with limited parking is the trade-off you deal with.
Highway Noise Heads-Up
US-41 runs right along the park. You'll hear traffic at the ramp and especially at the group site on the south side of the highway. It doesn't affect your time on the water, but if you're lingering at the launch rigging gear, it's not exactly wilderness quiet.
