Fishing Perch Lake

Marquette County, Michigan · DNR Survey 2018

Scout's Fishing Notes

Perch Lake's 50-year trout management era has ended due to poor survival caused by limited cold-water habitat - only 8.7% of the lake volume provides suitable trout conditions in summer. Rock Bass dominate the fishery at nearly 50% of all fish caught, but growth is poor with only 3% reaching the preferred 6-inch size. Pumpkinseed are abundant but stunted, with 6-year-old fish growing 2+ inches below state average and zero fish reaching 6 inches. Yellow Perch show the worst growth of any species, running 3 inches below average at age 6, though 30% still reach harvestable size above 6 inches. The lake's oligotrophic (nutrient-poor) nature limits food production, compounded by a severe lack of woody habitat - only 108 fallen trees per shoreline mile compared to the regional average of over 500. During summer stratification, dissolved oxygen drops to zero below 24 feet, concentrating all fish in the upper water column. The lake thermally stratifies with a distinct thermocline between 15-20 feet. Bottom substrates transition from sand and gravel nearshore to organic peat in deeper areas. Aquatic vegetation includes submergent pondweeds and scattered lily pads. The shoreline remains largely undeveloped with only 1.6 dwellings per mile and minimal dock construction. DNR plans to install large woody debris structures in northwest and southwest areas to create invertebrate habitat and improve panfish growth. The lake's mining heritage includes past concerns about iron dust settling on the surface from nearby Republic Iron Company operations.

Ice Fishing

Located in Marquette County, Perch Lake gets full Upper Peninsula winters and likely freezes reliably. Ice fishing for perch and panfish is a natural fit given the lake's namesake species. Always check local ice conditions — UP lakes can have variable snow cover that insulates unevenly.

DNR Management Direction

DNR is ceasing Rainbow Trout stocking and removing Type A regulations. Future management will focus on habitat improvement through installation of large woody debris to benefit warmwater species growth and size structure.
