Crowding Very busy on summer weekends — the Hamlin Lake day-use area is one of the most popular in Michigan's most-visited state park. Arrive early for trailer parking and ramp space.
Plan B — if this lot is full Free township launches at Wilson Hill, Victory, and South Bayou are good alternatives if the State Park lot is full or you'd rather skip the Recreation Passport.

Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Freshly Repaved
The day-use launch lot got a full repave during the park's 2024–25 infrastructure project (the park reopened July 1, 2025), so you're backing onto fresh pavement. Two proper paved lanes, 44 trailer spots, and an accessible pier — it's the most capable ramp on the lake and handles boats up to about 22 feet.
Two Ramps — Take the North Side
Regulars say the north-side ramp lays out best. The east-side ramp can fight you as the current pulls toward the dam, so if you've got the choice and a crosswind, favor the north side.
Mind the Shallow Flats
The sand flats just off the launch can sand-lock an outboard if you drop the skeg too soon. Keep your motor up until you're into deeper water, then trim down.
Passport Required, Parking Plentiful
With 44 trailer spots you're almost never circling, even on a peak July weekend. There's no separate launch fee, but you need a Michigan Recreation Passport to enter the park ($13/yr for residents) — no passport, no entry.
Beach-House Amenities Next Door
Restrooms, concessions, and kayak/canoe/SUP rentals are right at the adjacent Hamlin Lake beach house, and there's an accessible universal kayak launch about 50 feet north of the boat ramp. It's also a popular put-in for paddlers headed to the protected Lost Lake trail. Summer weekends fill early — come in the morning.
