Fishing Crystal Lake

Montcalm County, Michigan · DNR Survey 2021

Scout's Fishing Notes

Crystal Lake delivers exceptional walleye fishing with fast-growing fish averaging above state growth rates and 93% reaching legal size. The 2021 population estimate found 1.4 walleye per acre, considered a fair to good fishery density. Female walleye grow significantly faster than males, reaching 1.5-2.2 inches larger at the same age. Most walleye hit the 15-inch legal mark by age 3 due to excellent growth conditions. The fishery relies heavily on stocking but shows some natural reproduction, with about 15% of the population being wild fish. Northern pike remain abundant but grow slowly, with most fish under 24 inches and growth indices 2-3 points below state average. However, the 2014 liberalized harvest regulation appears to be working - growth rates have improved and the 2021 survey captured the first pike over 30 inches in lake history. The bluegill fishery is outstanding with a Schneider Index of 6.7 (between excellent and superior), a dramatic improvement from poor ratings in the 1990s. Over 80% of bluegill exceed 7 inches, providing excellent panfish action. Crystal Lake stratifies strongly with good dissolved oxygen to 20 feet but none below 21 feet, so focus summer fishing in the upper water column. The lake's marl bottom with sand and gravel areas provides excellent habitat, while extensive littoral shoals hold most fish. Deep water concentrates on the southern shore and mid-lake pockets reaching 70 feet maximum depth. The DNR boat launch on the northeast shore offers excellent access with paved parking for 46 vehicles, while a smaller township launch provides south-side access.

DNR Management Direction

Continue biennial stocking of spring fingerling Walleye at 50 fish per acre. Encourage harvest of Northern Pike under liberalized regulation (5 daily, only 1 over 24 inches). Promote natural shoreline restoration by riparian landowners.
