Weekend Parking Wars
82 trailer spots sounds like plenty, but on summer weekends it gets tight — especially when non-boaters park cars in trailer spots. Get there before 8 AM on Saturdays or you'll be circling. The state park setting means you're competing with picnickers and hikers for space too.
Big Lake Gateway
This is your quickest shot from a state park ramp to Lake Michigan through the Muskegon Channel. Muskegon Lake itself is 4,150 acres of productive water, but the real draw is staging here for big lake runs without dealing with the city launch fees.
Dock Alignment Issues
Six lanes across three docks should move traffic fast, but the docks tend to shift and get crooked as the season goes on. Spacing between them gets uneven, which can make maneuvering a wider boat a little dicey. One of the ramp lanes sits closer to water level than the others — annoying for deep-V trailers but actually great if you're sliding a kayak in.
Check Seasonal Closures
This ramp has a habit of closing without much warning. It was shut down at least once unexpectedly, and there's construction slated for fall 2025. If you're driving any distance, call the state park office first — there's nothing posted online that stays current.
Fish Cleaning Station Gamble
There's a fish cleaning station right at the ramp, which is a huge plus after a walleye or salmon run — when it's working. As of 2024 it was out of service. Don't plan your whole cleaning setup around it being operational.
