Fishing Fremont Lake

Newaygo County, Michigan · 88 ft max depth · DNR Survey 2025

Scout's Fishing Notes

Fremont Lake offers exceptional fishing for northern pike and walleye, both growing well above state averages. Northern pike comprise 26% of the fish biomass and average 26 inches, with growth exceeding the state average by nearly 2 inches. The 2022 population estimate found 1,944 adult walleye exceeding the target density, with the 2022 stocked year class particularly strong (65% of aged fish). Walleye grow 1.8 inches above average and 68% reach the 15-inch minimum. Largemouth bass also excel with 97% legal size and above-average growth. Smallmouth bass dominate tournament catches (87% of bass entries) with an average weight of 2.44 pounds. The lake stratifies strongly with oxygen suitable for fish only to 19 feet depth in summer, concentrating fish in the upper water column. Panfish opportunities are limited - while rock bass provide the best option with 96% legal size, bluegill and pumpkinseed populations remain very low. Yellow perch are numerous but mostly under 7 inches. The heavily developed shoreline (56% armored) lacks natural habitat, though submerged trees are above average. Common carp remain problematic despite the 1982 whole-lake treatment, making bowfishing opportunities excellent. Substrates consist primarily of marl, sand, and organic materials. The lake's maximum depth of 86 feet provides thermal refuge for coldwater-tolerant species, though trout stocking was discontinued in 1991 due to poor survival.

DNR Management Direction

Continue biannual walleye stocking at 39,500 spring fingerlings (50/acre), promote bowfishing for common carp control, encourage natural shoreline management to improve fish habitat, limit aquatic plant treatments to nuisance situations only.
