Fishing Sylvan Lake

Newaygo County, Michigan · 63 ft max depth · DNR Survey 2004

Scout's Fishing Notes

Sylvan Lake functions as one system with Emerald Lake through a connecting channel, offering similar fishing opportunities with some notable differences. The 113-acre lake reaches 60 feet deep and maintains excellent oxygen levels down to 29 feet within its thermocline layer. Rock bass and yellow perch show the best action with good numbers of larger fish, while black crappie numbers are lower but size quality remains good. Bluegill populations are even more stunted than Emerald with only 4.6% reaching 6+ inches and worse growth rates. Largemouth bass catch rates run lower in electrofishing but similar size fish are present to 19 inches. Northern pike grow extremely poorly like Emerald but reach similar maximum sizes. Water clarity averages 8.2 feet, slightly lower than Emerald, with similar mesotrophic conditions. The lake shares the same marl bottom composition that limits productivity despite good alkalinity. Zooplankton size is exceptionally large, well above the state 75th percentile, indicating excellent potential for bluegill growth that habitat degradation prevents. Heavy shoreline development, chemical vegetation treatments, and very low submerged wood densities impact fish populations. The same aquatic plant communities exist with dense Chara beds providing primary structure. Originally surveyed in 1892 as Big Marl Lake, the fishery composition has remained remarkably stable with northern pike, largemouth bass, bluegill and yellow perch dominating catches. Lake herring may be present given the excellent coldwater thermocline habitat and connectivity to the system where they historically occurred.
