Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Superior Can Punish
This is Lake Superior — if the wind shifts out of the north or northwest, you can go from glass to 4-foot rollers in under an hour. The launch faces the open lake with minimal protection, so keep an eye on conditions and don't push your luck with smaller boats. Anything under 18 feet, think twice on iffy days.
Ontonagon Gem
Tucked right in the village, walking distance to everything. Fish cleaning station on-site, a shower house, and clean restrooms — amenities you don't expect at a small township launch this far up the peninsula. It feels like a well-kept secret.
Parking Goes Fast
Only 16 trailer spots, and on summer weekends — especially during salmon and lake trout runs — they fill by mid-morning. There's some overflow potential along nearby streets, but you'll be hoofing it back. Weekdays are a different story; you'll practically have the place to yourself.
Wall Tie-Up Option
There's a seawall that can hold four or five boats, so you can launch, park your trailer, and tie up without blocking the ramp. Great setup if you're waiting on buddies or just gearing up. Anchoring out front works too — the bottom holds reasonably well in calm conditions.
Seasonal Window
Realistically you're launching here late May through October. Spring ice can linger on Superior well into May, and by November the weather gets dicey fast. Peak fishing runs mid-June through September, and that's when the ramp sees most of its traffic.
