Ferry Hub First
This is primarily the Isle Royale Queen IV ferry dock, not a traditional fishing launch. The single lane handles ferry operations and some small boat launching, but don't expect to show up and quickly drop a bass boat — you're sharing infrastructure with a commercial ferry service running to Rock Harbor.
Parking Gets Tricky
Only 7 of the 37 trailer spots are actually signed and striped for vehicle/trailer combos. The rest are car-only spaces, mostly used by Isle Royale day-trippers and hikers. If you're towing anything, get there early in the morning during peak summer — once those 7 spots are claimed, you're out of luck.
Superior Doesn't Forgive
You're launching directly into open Lake Superior here. Even on calm days, swells can roll into the harbor, and conditions can go from glass to four-footers in an hour. Boats under 18 feet have no business heading out past the harbor mouth unless you really know what you're doing. The ferry itself gets cancelled on rough days — that tells you something.
Remote But Worth It
You're at the very tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, a solid hour from Houghton on a winding two-lane road. No marine fuel nearby, one small café at the dock, and limited cell service. Bring everything you need because there's no running back to town for a forgotten plug or extra gas.
Seasonal Window
Realistically you're launching here from late May through September. The harbor area can have ice into May some years, and Fort Wilkins closes seasonal facilities after October. July and August weekends see the most ferry traffic, so midweek launches are far less chaotic.
