Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Harbor Shelter Matters
Eagle Harbor is one of the best-protected launches on this stretch of Superior. Once you clear the harbor mouth, though, it gets exposed fast — whitecaps can build in a hurry from the northwest. If the wind's above 15 knots, think twice before heading out past the lighthouse.
Parking Is Informal
The 20-ish trailer spots are more of a suggestion than a reality. You've got a gravel area with some bumpers and a big mowed grass section where people park trailers however they fit. Works fine when it's not busy, but on a calm July Saturday things get creative. Pull in tight and don't block the grass access.
Not Just A Launch
This place doubles as a tourist stop — there's a maritime museum, lighthouse views, dog walkers, agate hunters. Expect foot traffic around the ramp area, especially mid-afternoon in summer. Early morning launches are smooth; by noon you're weaving around sightseers.
Remote But Worth It
You're a solid 45 minutes from anything resembling a town with services. Top off your fuel before you get here and bring what you need. The tradeoff is access to some of the best fishing on the Keweenaw's north shore — lake trout and coasters if you know where to troll.
Ramp Condition
Two lanes, decent shape thanks to that federal infrastructure grant a few years back. Concrete holds up well but gravel and sand wash onto the ramp after big storms. The grade is gentle enough for smaller rigs, and water depth at the end has been adequate even in lower-water years. Just don't try to launch anything over 24 feet here — the approach is a bit tight for big trailers.
