Fishing Otsego Lake

Otsego County, Michigan · DNR Survey 2007

Scout's Fishing Notes

Otsego Lake offers exceptional walleye fishing with fish averaging 19.5 inches and growing 2.1 inches above state average across age classes 1-13 years. The walleye fishery has become a destination for anglers since stocking resumed in 1991, with 76% of fish reaching legal size. Northern pike show outstanding growth at 4.7 inches above state average, but the population lacks older trophy fish due to harvest pressure. The lake's 31-acre northern pike spawning marsh on the northwest tip is actively managed each spring, with adult pike captured and transferred to spawn, producing strong year classes like the abundant age-2 fish from 2004 operations. Rock bass provide consistent action with good numbers averaging 7.8 inches and 82% legal size. Bluegill are present in fair numbers with exceptional growth rates (2.2 inches above average) and a strong age-4 year class of 7.5-8.7 inch fish that should provide excellent fishing. The lake holds a developing smallmouth bass population growing nearly an inch above state average. Yellow perch are abundant but run small (averaging 3.2 inches) due to strong young year classes that provide crucial forage for walleye. Lake sturgeon provide a unique trophy opportunity, with 109 fish registered in the harvest as of 2010 from periodic stocking efforts. The lake's shallow nature (23-foot maximum depth, 9.8-foot average) with no thermal stratification means fish can be found at any depth. Historic logging operations left up to 23 feet of sawmill waste deposits creating biological dead zones, particularly in the north, west-central, and south basins where sand and gravel bottoms have been buried under pulpy peat and decomposed wood debris. Aquatic vegetation is abundant with chara, potamogeton, milfoil, and lily pads providing fish habitat, though invasive Eurasian milfoil and curly-leaf pondweed are present.

Ice Fishing

Otsego Lake is in the Gaylord area, which gets heavy snowfall and cold winters, so the lake freezes reliably. Ice fishing does happen here, though it's not a marquee ice fishing destination. Always check local ice conditions before heading out — snow insulation can create uneven thickness.

DNR Management Direction

Continue walleye stocking every other year at 50 spring fingerlings per acre. Maintain northern pike rearing marsh operations. Stock northern muskellunge every third year to control white sucker population. Periodic lake sturgeon stocking every five years. Focus on habitat protection and potential removal of historic sawmill waste deposits.
