Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Cross-Street Parking Hassle
The ramp-side lot holds maybe 30 trailers, so on any decent summer day you're parking across Ottawa Beach Road in the overflow lot with the other 130+ spots. That road gets steady traffic — they finally added a crosswalk, but you're still dodging cars while hauling coolers and kids back and forth to the docks.
Ramp Floods Regularly
Water levels on Macatawa have been brutal. The ramp has been partially or fully submerged for stretches, and even in calmer years you'll be wading ankle-deep to reach the dock. Check before you go — it's not a "sometimes" problem, it's a recurring one tied to Lake Michigan levels pushing back through the channel.
Summer Weekends Are Chaos
Six lanes and four docks sound generous until every pontoon and wake boat in Holland shows up on a Saturday afternoon. Early morning weekday launches are a dream — eight boats in the lot, no wait. By noon on a sunny weekend, expect a line at the ramp and a scramble for dock space. If you're trailering anything over 22 feet, stick to the center docks where there's more depth and room to maneuver.
Lake Michigan Access
This is the best public ramp on Macatawa and your gateway to Lake Michigan through the Holland channel. That alone makes it worth dealing with the crowds — there's no other launch on this lake that gives you open-water access this easily. The channel is well-marked but watch for heavy sailboat and yacht traffic near the Macatawa Bay Yacht Club.
Fish Cleaning Station
There's a legit fish cleaning station in the overflow lot, which is a nice perk you won't find at most Michigan launches. Fair warning though — the trash cans over there overflow fast on busy weekends, and there's nothing on the ramp side itself. Bring a bag for your own trash.
