Fishing Ocqueoc Lake

Presque Isle County, Michigan · 34 ft max depth · DNR Survey 2016

Scout's Fishing Notes

Ocqueoc Lake offers a diverse northern Michigan fishery dominated by Northern Pike up to 31 inches, though most run 12-25 inches with below-average growth (index -0.3). The pike population benefits from liberal regulations—no size limit and a 5-fish bag—making it an excellent target for anglers seeking consistent action. Bluegill have become the most abundant panfish but 80% are age-1 fish under 3 inches, with growth below state average (index -0.2) and few exceeding 8 inches. Yellow Perch remain severely stunted as they have since 1947, most measuring just 3-4 inches with well-below-average growth (index -1.2) despite decades of Walleye stocking intended to provide predation pressure. Black Crappie show the best panfish quality with above-average growth (index +1.7) and fish reaching 13 inches, though they're less abundant now than in the 1980s-90s due to natural population cycles. Walleye fishing depends entirely on stocking, with fish growing slowly to legal size (15 inches) around age 5—recent surveys show declining abundance despite continued stocking efforts every other year. The lake stratifies thermally in summer with dissolved oxygen dropping below fish-survival levels below 13 feet, concentrating gamefish in the upper water column. Migrant Steelhead from Lake Huron periodically use the lake during spawning runs, offering bonus opportunities for trout anglers. The Ocqueoc River flows directly through the lake, creating a unique half-lake, half-river environment with black-stained water from upstream conifer swamps and abundant submerged logs from the old logging era. An unimproved boat launch on the south shore provides access, though parking is very limited.

DNR Management Direction

Continue Walleye stocking at 75/acre every other year to supplement marginal population. Maintain liberal Northern Pike regulations (no size limit, 5 fish bag) to allow harvest. Monitor fish community infrequently, approximately every 20-30 years.
