Ramp Quirks & Etiquette
Shallow River Mouth
The Ocqueoc is a blackwater river and the mouth can get surprisingly shallow, especially mid-to-late summer. If you're running anything with more than a moderate draft, check what you're working with before committing. Small boats and kayaks are ideal here.
Single Lane, No Rush
One lane, but honestly the traffic here is light enough that it rarely matters. This isn't a high-volume launch — you might see a handful of trailers on a weekend. Weekday mornings you'll likely have the place to yourself.
Parking Split
The 20 trailer spots are divided between the ramp area and a lot closer to the road. If you pull in and the waterside spots are taken, don't panic — just head back toward the road lot. Short walk but easy enough.
State Park Perks
Being part of Hoeft State Park means the area is reasonably well-maintained compared to some of the more remote Presque Isle launches. The trade-off is you'll need a Recreation Passport on your vehicle. Worth it for the clean access and the scenery alone.
Lake Huron Access
You can use this to slip out into Lake Huron, but be smart about it — the river mouth can shift with sand and sediment, and wind out of the northeast will stack water and waves right into it. Best suited for calm days if you're heading out onto the big lake. On rough days, keep it to the river.
